A Child's Lesson to the Beggar

Visiting a temple to pray for selfish desires
I'm no different from many like-minded liars
Searching for sanctity I can never find
Random desires and hymns accompanying a dithering mind

Outside the holy place, set to leave my footwear
I'm confronted with two twinkling 'Eyes of Despair'
My involuntary muscles lead me to my purse
Here's my 5 Rupee coin to free You from this 'Curse'

Innocent hands throw away the plate full of currency
Fading echoes of nickels shattering my complacency
I look at the "Little One" - O What have you done?
The eyes smile - "You shall never know me, O confounded one"

Ready to chant my selfish lines
The Priest greets me with his tummy of twines
A quick search of the pocket for money
A 100 rupee note; but no change or penny

With a sheepish smile, I escape from the shrine
My materialistic paper today is mine
The 'Little One' greets my exit with a smile so strange
"O Miserable one, I see you don't have change

I shared when I didn't have - all too knowingly
You cannot part with what you have - even unknowingly
Go, O beggar. Learn to Give for your brothers
Only then shall I listen to your desires and that of many such others"
